Keeping a countdown readable

I rebuilt a countdown to examine how its digits change. I wanted each passing second to register without making the full value difficult to read.

Keeping unchanged digits still

The outgoing digit rolls away and softens while the incoming one becomes clear. Digits whose values stay the same remain still. Those fixed positions let me follow the update while continuing to read the full time.

Time to settle

The movement finishes before the next second arrives, leaving the new value still and readable.

I watched the countdown repeatedly to compare when each digit arrived, how long it stayed still, and when it began moving again.

Pausing the count

Pausing stops the movement without rearranging the digits. Resuming returns to the same sequence of change and rest. I review these states together to judge whether the time stays readable throughout the interaction.
