Making room for a glance
I rebuilt familiar widgets to compare what changes between their sizes. I looked at which information stays prominent and how each layout uses the additional space.
Showing more information
Weather gives the current temperature the most emphasis. The forecast beneath it adds detail through repeated hours, symbols, and temperatures.
Calendar uses additional space for upcoming events or a wider calendar view. Comparing the sizes shows which information stays prominent as more is added around it.
Cropping a photograph
In Photos, most of the widget is an image. Changing its size changes the crop and the space around the subject. I compare where the subject falls at each size and where a date or caption can remain readable. The extra space changes both the composition and the amount of image shown.
Keeping controls with the content
Music keeps playback controls with the song. Reminders places completion beside the task it affects.
I compare which information appears first, what a larger size adds, and how each action relates to the content. The choices differ for each widget.
